to what I have already described in the case of the pit at No. 4 Bridge, the pricker being pushed down a depth of fully 13 feet.

Seeing that the masonry is practically completel and that the bridge is close to the base of the range of hills, before advising what measures should be aloptel in this case, I submit that a few borings be taken alongside both abutments to ascertain at what depth the hard ground exists. It may be possible to underpin the founda- tions or adopt other measures to render the bridge secure.

Bridge No. 8 This bridge was not referred to in your letter under reply but, from the fact that it occupies a position near the centre of the same valley as that in which Brilge No. 7 is situated and is, I understand, similarly founded, I consider that it would be advisable to have borings taken alongside it also.
